Gift  Box  with  Square  Nail  Hardware  Closure

This small box was made as a gift for a family friend who collects antique hardware.  The box was made to hold an antique brass doorknob.  The box dimesions are roughly 8" wide by 4" tall.  This is a modified clamshell box where the spine does not drop down and lay flat when the box is open.  It is more of a shoebox shape with a permanently attached hinged lid.  The top, bottom, and back edges of the box are covered with a rust linen bookcloth.  The sides are covered with a burgundy vellum book cloth.  The box is lined with a dark brown paper and the lid is stamped with the name of our family friend in burgundy hot foil stamping pigment over a background of a brick pattern (this friend is also interested in old paving bricks).  The closure on the front of the box consists of a leather loop attached to the lid with a rivet that holds a metal washer.  The washer fits over a leather loop on the front of the box and an antique square nail holds everything in place.  This box (and the doorknob) was a big hit.
