Rocket  Journal

This blank lined book was custom made for a client who was a fan of 1950's-era science fiction.  She wanted a blank book for herself with a design on the cover inspired by this era.  The pages were all handsewn and this book had beautiful black endpapers with silver swirls on them which looked a bit to me like the swirling stars in a galaxy.  The title of this book, "SPACE", was stamped on the spine in silver foil with moveable metal type.  The rocket ship design is raised on the front cover and the "tail" of the rocket was recessed by carving the design into the cover board.  The leather was then shaped to fit into the raised and recessed areas.  The cover is black pigskin leather.  Each star was stamped onto the cover one at a time in pewter, silver, and chrome foils.  The rocket ship and tail were silver-leafed to really bring out the design and give it a fun, metallic look.  Where the "tail" of the ship crosses the spine, there is a raised cord on the spine that follows the shape and direction of the tail.  This was also silver-leafed.  There were a lot of steps involved in creating this cover.  A great deal of time was spent creating the raised and recessed design as well as stamping all of the stars on one at a time.

A book like this would cost around $350.
