Oversized Lion's Head Journal This book was created for an artist who wanted an oversized journal where she could also mount some items on the pages scrapbook-style. This book is 16" tall by 12" wide (my max size) and has 125 pages. This book was made with 250 pages, then half of them (every other page) was cut out leaving a stub in the spine. This allows room for mounting items on some of the pages; a total of 3/4 of an inch of thickness can be added to this book without it looking overstuffed when done and without putting stress on the spine. The cover image of the lion head was adapted from a very cool drawing provided by the customer. In her drawing, the lion image "faded out" on the right side of the page. I tried to imitate that in the cover design. The cover also has raised front and back panels, corner decorations stamped in pewter stamping foil, and the name of the artist on the spine in silver foil. I really liked the bold size of the design on the cover of a book this large. The cover is navy pigskin leather and the endpapers in a blue swirled pattern really seemed to match the feel of the scroll designs on the cover. A book like involves lots of carving of raised areas on the cover and would cost around $390. |
