Anniversary Journal with Inset Brass India-Inspired Decoration and Raised Calligraphic Ganesh This anniversary journal was created for a couple who had a traditional Indian wedding. The husband, ordering this journal for his wife, wanted the book to reflect the colors used in the wedding. This couple had two gorgeous and ornate wedding outfits. For part of the ceremony, the bride wore an outfit that was mostly red and gold and later changed into one in shades of pale blue and pink. The book is red pigskin leather with a pale blue ornate monogram on the back cover. The front cover has an inset antique cast metal decoration in a gold tone with a medallion featuring the image of the Ganesh deity, slightly raised, made to look as if it were done in calligraphy. This book has 200 pages that are 10" square. This book also has pink marbled endpapers made by me using the Japanese Suminagashi marbling technique with red ink on pink paper (Suminagashi colors are almost always pastel, so the red ink created a pink swirl design). A light blue ribbon page marker helped tie it all together. I also made a slipcase for this book. The slipcase is done entirely in the colors of the second wedding outfit with a pale blue linen book cloth on the outside and a very pale pink paper lining the box. The box also has two "bumpers" that hold the book against one side of the box and give the raised Ganesh medallion space so that it never rubs against the inside. The metal decoration on the front is a one-of-a-kind piece of antique hardware (probably the back-plate to the lock on a door) and I was glad it fit so well into this cover design. I try to pick up random pieces of antique hardware and sometimes I happen to have something that will work on a given project. This couple was nice enough to send some of their lovely wedding photos which you can see at the bottom of this page. A book like (including the slipcase and the die ordered to stamp the monogram on the back cover) this would cost around $400. |
