100 lined pages of acid-free, archival paper in off white.

Pages are handsewn in signatures with cotton thread (by sewing the book this way, it will lay open completely flat).

Endpapers are off-white Italian laid.

Cover is made from binder's board with a raised (relief) fish scale design.  Each individual scale was cut from lightweight tag board and glued into place under the leather of the cover.

A rectangular area was then cut into the board to accomodate the blind stamp fish inlay.

After the "scales" were in place, the boards were then covered in cranberry pigskin leather.  The leather was worked down into the design to take the shape of the decoration under it.

A trout was blind stamped (without stamping foil) onto burgundy goatskin leather.  This blind stamp was then cut out and mounted in the recessed area in the center of the cover.

Fish hook closure is made from copper wire and copper tubing that was hand-forged to resemble a fish hook.  There is a small copper tab on the front cover to protect the leather from the point of the hook.  To open the book, the hook slides out of the copper tube that is inlaid into the back of the cover. The book can then be opened.

Made with all archival adhesives.  The metal closure pieces are permanently attached to the leather of the book cover with 2-ton clear epoxy (except for the sliding hook which can be completely removed from the tube on the back cover for easy transport).

This book was completely handmade from start to finish.

This book would make a very nice journal, or guest book.

PLEASE NOTE: The hook closure on this book is somewhat delicate and somewhat sharp (the barb can easily catch on things).  This is NOT the type of book that you can just throw in your backpack.  Because of the nature of the fish hook closure, it DOES need to be handled with some care.  If this book were going to be transported often, I would recommend that you order a custom-made clamshell box from me so that the book would be secure and protected.  (Clamshell boxes are custom-made to fit the book and range in price from $150-$200.)  You can also completely remove the hook closure from the tube on the back to transport the book.
