"Atlas Shrugged" Metal Door Journal This journal was commissioned as a present for a woman who loved the book "Atlas Shrugged". This customer wanted to create a book with a metal door on front taken from the description of the fictional door in the book. This was described in the book as a smooth metal door in a granite building facade with an inscription above it. The order for this book was placed in August. It was needed for Christmas. It was finished about 1 week before Christmas! This is an example of a book that took quite a long time to create due to all of the parts involved (I found the perfect color of gray leather for the book when on vacation in Gallup, NM; I had to enlist the help of a metal fabricator I know to help shape the door; I had to find just the right metal domed-top rivets to fit the scale of the book, etc.). The door is made of aluminum sheet which was formed, drilled for the decorative rivets to be inserted, and was the last thing to be permanently mounted on the cover of the book. There as also a fair amount of time involved in creating the raised frame around the door with the inscription (including paring down a lighter gray piece of leather to be thin enough to take the shape of the bulit-up door frame design underneath). This book also had the recipient's initials on the spine in pewter foil and I stamped a recessed pewter "ground line" across the entire front and back cover. I was happy with the results of this one, even though it was one of those projects that lasted for many months! If you want something complex, please order early! A book like this would cost around $500. |
